The Body and the Emotions – A study confirmed that we physically embody our emotions and drew them on a map.

From WIRED.CO.UK

A team of biomedical engineers has mapped the bodily reactions to emotions in 700 individuals and found that patterns were the same, whether the candidate was from Western Europe or East Asia.

This study highlights some interesting discoveries:

1/ Different people from different cultures associated different parts of their bodies to the same emotions.

2/ Different emotions were consistently associated with statistically separable bodily sensation maps across experiments.

3/ The authors are suggesting that these bodily impulses, when felt, drive the emotional reaction to the surface more forcefully – as we begin to associate a rapid heartbeat with fear, for instance, that rapidity makes us fearful.

4/ They found that certain emotions could be grouped together, in terms of bodily reactions. For instance, as is clear in the picture, anger, fear and anxiety were each associated with increased activity in the chest area and upper body. A tightness in the chest can be associated with these negative emotions, as well as an increased heart rate. Pride, however, inspired increased activity in this area but also in the head.

5/ All emotions triggered a sensation in the head area, the authors explain, “reflecting probably both physiological changes in the facial area (i.e., facial musculature activation, skin temperature, lacrimation) as well as the felt changes in the contents of mind triggered by the emotional events”.
